If you are past puberty and still suffering from breakouts like a school girl, either one of two things is happening: your hormones are out of whack or you are completely stressed out. Actually, you could be dealing with a little bit of both, but meditation is one remedy that could be the answer to these problems and more. And there is science to prove it.

A new field of study called psychodermatology examines the mind-skin connection as it relates to emotions. Dr. Karen Mallin, who holds a Doctor of Psychology and teaches at the University of Miami, has found an intricate relationship between what we feel and how our bodies react to it.

"The mind and skin are connected on many different levels," Mallin told WebMD. "A lot of nerve endings are connected to the skin, which wraps around the organs, so as emotions are played out neurologically, they can be expressed through the skin just as stress can be expressed through gastrointestinal symptoms, increased anxiety, or hypertension."

All is not lost. Dr. Liana Ashenden, who is a dermatologist and founder of the Nudu skincare line, says that focusing on yourself sans distractions can offset the effects that stress hormones like cortisol can have on your skin. "Chronic stress and feeling overwhelmed can be deeply disruptive to our sleep cycle, digestive process, inflammatory response, and other delicately balanced internal systems that keep us happy and healthy," Ashenden said in an interview for Glamour.

Ashenden suggests that we engage in activities that break up our hectic routines and force us to relax. It is prolonged chronic stress that does the most damage to our bodies, so taking a breather from time to time is essential to optimal health. That's where meditation comes in.

Some great ways to get started with meditation can include taking five minutes a day to yourself for some quiet time and practicing deep breathing. You might also need to get away from everybody and everything to take a yoga or meditation class. Check out this how-to video to help you find your inner peace. Your skin will thank you!
